Before You Begin Your Speech
Congratulations on taking the first steps to creating your speech. The hardest thing to do to get started is to simply put pen to paper with a few ideas. So lets get you started straight away by gathering some facts to use in your speech. We’ll start with the obvious things like names, dates etc… and move to more thought provoking things like stories and anecdotes about the bride and groom.

Killer Speech Opening
The number one thing to do in your speech is to introduce yourself. There are many ways of doing this, you can tell a story, tell a joke, or simply state who you are. However, as this is a best mans speech; let’s give you some better options on what you could say. This is one of the most important parts of your speech as it sets the tone for the rest of your speech and creates the atmosphere… make sure you select the most appropriate killer opening for the occasion and your style. Opening Fillers
You will notice how some of the opening lines are quite short? If you select a short opening line, then you’ll need to pad out your opening a little more with a funny joke, anecdote. Sometimes it just makes sense to follow on the way you start. So your speech flows:
If you selected a really short opener, something like: “Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, I hope everyone is enjoying this very special day so far. It’s been an emotional day, ……..even the cake is in tiers.” Then it would also make sense to select a second opening line from above. Check your speech so that it makes sense, it should flow and conform to a style you feel comfortable with. Congratulations.
You have now completed approximately one to two minutes of your speech.
Develop The Body Of Your Speech
This is the tough part of the speech. It requires a little bit of thought and planning. So lets break down the body into some different ideas you can talk about to develop your speech. Remember this though. You only have time to develop three or four of these ideas at the most. So it would be best to go through this entire exercise and see what content you would like to include, and the content to discard.
If you only intend to speak for 5 minutes. Then select one or two of these only. But they’ll need to be very good, high impact and very entertaining, otherwise your speech will lack substance.

All told, you will have about 3 pages of content up to this point. This is about ten to twelve minutes, maybe more if the audience laughs for long enough during the speech. You will need to do some arrangement in the way you mix the different types of body content. Your speech will be in need of having linking words and a logical order to it, but the hard work is now already done. The rest is just a matter of editing what is there and adding the appropriate linking sentences in and arranging the order to suit my speech style.
